We want Southwark to become known as one of the best connected digital boroughs in London. A borough where no-one is left offline. We want every Southwark resident to have access to a fast and stable internet connection, a device and the skills to participate in society and the digital economy by 2025.

We have organised these plans around five themes.

Smart neighbourhoods

We will make our borough better connected by:

  • empowering our residents and staff with better connectivity, tools and skills
  • using internet of things (IoT) sensors to monitor environmental factors
  • exchanging knowledge resources, and ideas with other organisations
  • learning from global best practices

People powered digital experiences

We will improve our residents’ online experience by:

  • redesigning our website to be more user-friendly, clear and accessible
  • making MySouthwark - our residents’ self-service portal more mobile friendly
  • using virtual assistants or chatbots to offer real-time help on our website

Digital inclusion: closing the gap

We will make sure no resident is left behind by providing:

  • free and affordable broadband to low-income residents and more public Wi-Fi
  • device lending programmes and donation schemes
  • digital skills, training centres and resources
  • innovation through hackathons, workshops and support for digital inclusion activities across London

A well-run council

Our organisation will be made more effective by investment in:

  • modern workplace technology that empowers our employees
  • digital workplace skills
  • user-centric services, creating systems that are easier to use
  • cyber security and infrastructure to keep data safe an maintain trust
  • digital culture - our Digital Together (DiTo) champions help to boost digital literacy and create a culture of innovation

Data enabled

We are making more effective, data-driven decisions by using:

  • a single view of the resident - so we can offer more personalised and effective support
  • data governance for collaboration
  • Microsoft modern data platform and Power BI
