Carer's assessment
Contents
Overview
If you regularly look after someone else, you can have a carer’s assessment.
It is not a test of your caring abilities. It's for us to assess what support, if any, could help you in your caring role.
This support could include:
- education and training
- practical help in the home
- support for your mental and physical wellbeing
You do not need to be living with the person you look after, or be providing full-time care.
You can also refer someone else for a carer's assessment.
Parent carers of a disabled child
If you look after a child under 18 with disabilities, a long-term health condition, or learning difficulties you have a right to an assessment under the Children Act.
In most cases, if you've have had a needs' assessment you will not need a carer's assessment also.
However, you have a right to a separate carer's assessment if that assessment does not fully meet your needs.
An assessment under the Children Act will consider the:
- help that your disabled child needs
- help that you may need to care for your disabled child
- needs of any other children in the family
Young carers
All young carers are eligible for a young carer's assessment. Contact Imago if you need help completing the assessment.
