Fire, gas and electrical safety

How to meet workplace fire, gas and electrical safety rules, including finding Gas Safe engineers and portable appliance testing (PAT tests).

Fire safety

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) enforces fire safety. You can contact them on 020 7587 2300.

Find out how to meet workplace fire safety rules on the London Fire Brigade website.

Gas safety

Gas safety is enforced by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Employers need to follow gas safety rules to help make sure workers and the public are safe.

If gas appliances, such as ovens, cookers and boilers, are not properly installed and maintained, there's a danger of fire, explosion, gas leaks and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

Find out more about gas safety on the HSE website.

Gas Safe Register

In domestic properties and workplaces you must use a Gas Safe registered engineer.

It's illegal for an unregistered person to carry out work on any domestic gas appliance

To check if an engineer is registered:

Anyone on the Gas Safe Register carries a Gas Safe ID card. This shows the type of work they're qualified to do and if their qualifications are up to date.

Electrical safety

Employers need to follow electrical safety rules to help make sure workers and the public are safe.

Every year many accidents at work involving electric shock or burns are reported. Poor electrical installations and faulty electrical appliances can also lead to fire.

Find out more about electrical safety on the HSE website.

Portable appliances (PAT testing)

Small portable appliances need to be regularly checked. This is called portable appliance testing (PAT tests). Find out more about PAT test rules on the HSE website.

Fixed installations

Fixed installations (electrical equipment that's permanently in place) should also be inspected and tested periodically by a competent person.

This includes the wiring and equipment between the supply meter and the point of use, for example socket outlets.
