• investigating complaints about workplaces
• running campaigns to improve health and safety awareness
• advising businesses on health and safety
• enforcing Sunday trading rules
• registering cooling towers and evaporative condensers

Several national organisations provide health and safety training:

• the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH)

• National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH)
