• properly planned by a competent person
• appropriately supervised 
• carried out safely

Equipment rules

All lifting equipment should be:

• fit for purpose
• appropriate for the task
• suitably marked
• in many cases, also have to be periodically examined thoroughly

Record keeping

Records must be kept of all thorough examinations. If any defects are found, you must report them to both:

• the person responsible for the equipment
• the relevant enforcing authority
