- properly planned by a competent person
- appropriately supervised
- carried out safely
Equipment rules
All lifting equipment should be:
- fit for purpose
- appropriate for the task
- suitably marked
- in many cases, also have to be periodically examined thoroughly

Record keeping
Records must be kept of all thorough examinations. If any defects are found, you must report them to both:
- the person responsible for the equipment
- the relevant enforcing authority
