What your business rates pay for

Information about what your business rates pay for and a link to the government's explanatory guide about business rates.

How business rates help fund the Elizabeth line

The Elizabeth line, previously called Crossrail, is London’s newest railway. It connects the outer suburbs of London and Heathrow Airport to the West End, the City and Canary Wharf.

Business ratepayers of larger properties have contributed to its funding through a business rate supplement (BRS) since April 2010.

Does my business have to pay the Elizabeth line BRS?

Most businesses don't have to pay the BRS. However, if your business has a larger property, with a rateable value above £75,000 you will need to pay a 2p business rate supplement. Reliefs will apply on the same basis as for your non-domestic rates (NNDR) bill.

Your bill will make clear if you have to pay the BRS.

It is expected that the BRS will be levied until no later than 2041, until the GLA’s Elizabeth borrowing is repaid.
