Dangerous wild animals licence
You need a licence to keep some animals considered to be wild, dangerous or exotic.
You must have a license to keep dangerous wild animals, including:
- venomous snakes
- venomous spiders
- some non-venomous spiders
- some reptiles
- monkeys

Eligibility
We'll only issue a dangerous wild animals licence if:
- you are over 18
- you’re the animal’s legal owner and a suitable person to hold the licence
- the animal will be kept in secure accommodation so it cannot escape
- the accommodation is clean and provides the animal with sufficient space for exercise and suitable ventilation, temperature, lighting and drainage
- there are satisfactory precautions in case of a fire
- adequate precautions are taken to prevent and control infectious diseases
- the licence holder has taken out adequate insurance against liability for any damage caused by the animal

Apply for a dangerous wild animals licence
We will ask a vet or authorised practitioner to inspect the premises the animal will be kept before we can issue a licence. We can also ask a local fire officer to inspect the premises.
Fees
New applications cost £662 for a year.
Duplicate certificates cost £14.
Renewing your licence
Licences expire on 31 December, the year they were issued. You’ll need to apply for a new licence before it expires if you want to keep the animals named on it.
