Choosing a trader and avoiding rogue traders

Overview

Be cautious when getting any home maintenance or improvement works done.

Good traders:

  • are often booked up weeks, or even months ahead and unlikely to be able to start immediately
  • don’t usually need to advertise through leaflet drops or use websites where you place a job online for traders to contact you

Never:

  • deal with uninvited doorstep traders – good traders do not need to knock on doors for work
  • pay large sums of money upfront – payments for major jobs should be staged and only paid on completion against an agreed plan of works
