Pre-schools

Safety and quality

Pre-schools are registered with the Ofsted and inspected regularly. The registration and inspection certificate should be displayed and you can ask to see the pre-school's most recent Ofsted report. Ofsted checks that the staff and premises are safe and suitable for children.

At least half the staff must be trained to work with children. The recommended ratio is:

  • 3 to 5-year-olds (one staff member for every eight children)
  • 2-year-olds (one adult for every four children)

There will often be more adults if parents help out. There should be no more than 26 children in one group. Most pre-schools provide places for between 10 and 20 children.
