Safety, quality and Ofsted
Ofsted registers pre-schools and inspects them regularly. The pre-school should display its registration and inspection certificate.
You can ask to see the pre-school's latest Ofsted report and check it on GOV.UK.
Ofsted checks that the staff and premises are safe and suitable for children.
At least half the staff must be trained to work with children. The recommended ratio is:
- 3 to 5-year-olds (1 staff member for every 8 children)
- 2-year-olds (1 adult for every 4 children)
There will often be more adults if parents help out. There should be no more than 26 children in 1 group.
Most pre-schools provide places for between 10 and 20 children.
