Childminders are regularly inspected by Ofsted to make sure high standards of care are maintained.
They look after children from a few months old up to those about to enter secondary school.
Childminders care for children in a home setting, often the childminder’s own home.
They're self-employed and set their own hours, usually from 8am to 6pm, part or full-time.
Some provide early morning, evening and weekend care by arrangement. This can include school drop-offs and pick-ups. They accommodate families with varying needs.
They usually offer flexible hours and can make the most of local parks, playgrounds and community centres.
A childminder can look after up to 6 children under 8 years old, including their own.
No more than 3 of these should be under 5 years old. This ensures quality, focused care for each child.
Childminders who work with assistants may look after more children.
If they look after more than one child the children can play together, make friends and develop their social skills.
Anyone looking after children up to age 8 that they're not related to for more than 2 hours a day for reward must register as a childminder.
