Responsibilities

Private foster carers

You must tell us you plan to privately foster a child:

  • at least 6 weeks in advance

  • within 48 hours if it’s an emergency

A social worker will then:

  • inspect your home
  • get the child or young person’s views
  • carry out assessments
  • make reasonable recommendations

Parents

You must tell us that your child is going to be privately fostered:

  • at least 6 weeks in advance

  • within 48 hours if it’s an emergency

You must make sure the needs of your child are being met by the private foster carer.

Southwark Council

We're responsible for making sure the private foster care a child receives meets their welfare and safety needs.

Once we’re told about a private fostering arrangement we will make an assessment of it. We will visit and provide advice and support to a child, their foster carers and parents throughout a private fostering arrangement to make sure it meets the child’s needs.
