Cleaner Greener Safer

Find out more about the Cleaner Greener Safer (CGS) programme.

The Cleaner Greener Safer (CGS) programme funds ideas from local organisations and individuals who live or work in Southwark, which permanently improve their local area.

Examples include creating a community garden,  cycle parking on your estate, or renovating a play area near you.

Funding ranges from £100 for small gardening projects to £50,000 contributions to large construction projects.

To find out what the finding can and cannot be used for, read the guidance notes for the application form.

Applications are open from 9 September to 13 October 2024 (midnight).

If you’re applying for the funding for public art, read our guidance.

How funding is awarded

Funding is awarded as a grant or as a project. If you apply for grant funding, you must be a constituted organisation, tenant and resident association (TRA), charity, or club. You can apply to deliver the idea yourself.

Grant funding is awarded directly to your group after your project is complete and you’ve provided proof of project spending to the grants officer.

If you apply for project funding, you must be an individual or a group that does not wish to manage the implementation of your idea. The CGS team will do it for you. As the project sponsor, you’ll be heavily involved in the process.

Previous projects and grants

We've invested in a wide range of projects and grants across Southwark that have had a positive impact on the community. You can find information about these projects on this page.

Who decides?

Your ward councillors make funding decisions in the following February or March after assessing the applications. The decisions are announced at public meetings.

You’ll be notified in writing of the outcome of your application after the meeting. Funding is usually available at the beginning of the next financial year (April).

Find out who your local ward councillors are.

Applicants cannot start their projects until the grants officer has agreed the project programme and costs.
