Background to the programme
We are committed to celebrating the diversity and heritage of our borough. This includes the contributions of our LGBTQI+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer & Intersex) community.
The 2021 Census recorded that for the London Borough of Southwark:
- around 1 in 20 (4.5%) identified as lesbian or gay
- 1 in 30 (3.2%) identified as bisexual or pansexual
Southwark ranked as fourth highest local authority in England for LGB+ identity. This is likely to be an underestimate due to ongoing stigma.
