Student discount

If you're a student, or a student lives with you, you could get money off.

If there's one person in your home who is not a student and all other people are, you may get a 25% discount.

You may not have to pay Council Tax if:

  • your home is only occupied by students
  • your home is only occupied by students and school or college leavers
  • your home is only occupied by students and people who are severely mentally impaired
  • you’re a student and you’ve left your home empty during term time to study elsewhere

You must continue paying while we decide and tell us about any changes within 21 days.

Eligibility

You may be able to get a student discount or exemption if you're a:

  • full-time university or college student studying for at least 21 hours a week for 24 weeks in the year, for at least 1 academic or calendar year. 

  • student in further education who's under 20 years old and has been studying on a course for at least 12 hours per week for the past 3 months

  • foreign language assistant appointed at a school or college in Great Britain that's registered with the British Council

Documents we'll need

When you apply you'll need to show proof of study. 

If you're a student or foreign language assistant upload a student certificate(s) from your place of study. 

If you're in further education upload a student certificate, letter or learning agreement from your school or college. 

They must state:

  • your full name
  • course name
  • course start date
  • course end date
  • number of study hours or if its full or part-time study

Foreign language assistants will also need to upload their passport.
