Appeal a decision

Find out what to do if you think your bill is wrong or you disagree with a decision we've made.

Before you appeal your bill you may want to get in touch to see if we can help.

Appeal your bill

If you think your Council Tax bill is wrong you can ask us to check it

You must continue paying your Council Tax bill while we check.

Common reasons why you may want to appeal your bill include:

  • receiving a bill addressed to someone else, or you do not think you should pay it
  • checking about a discount or exemption you’ve applied for but have not yet received
  • if you’ve applied for a discount or exemption and you think the amount is wrong
  • appealing a decision we’ve made about a Disabled Band Reduction
  • wanting us to review our decision to take court action or charge costs

If you disagree with our decision, or we take longer than 2 months to respond, you can appeal to the independent Valuation Office Agency.

Appeal Council Tax Reduction decision

Council Tax Reduction is a discount for those on low income or benefits, like Universal Credit.

If you disagree with a decision we've made about this you can ask us to explain or reconsider it.

You’ll need to tell us what you think is wrong, for example:

  • your bill does not include a reduction and you think it should
  • the amount of the reduction is wrong
  • we’ve asked you to repay some money and you think we’ve made a mistake

Include any extra information to support your request.

Explain or reconsider decision

If we cannot change the decision and you still disagree, you can appeal to the Valuation Office Agency.
