Bands and charges

Check your Council Tax band, how much you need to pay and what to do if you think it's wrong.

Every residential property has a Council Tax band ranging from band A (the lowest) to band H (the highest). It's based on the value of your property from 1 April 1991.

The HMRC's Valuation Office Agency (VOA) decides on the bands, not Southwark Council.

The amount of Council Tax you have to pay depends on:

  • which band your property is in

  • how much we charge for that band

Your band may change if:

  • you make alterations to your home

  • a similar property in the area has been changed to a different band

You can:

If the VOA agree your band is wrong they'll put it right. We'll then update your Council Tax bill.

You must continue paying your bill while your challenge is being considered.
