East Lodge at Nunhead Cemetery

Find information about the delivery phase to restore East Lodge.

This exciting project will protect and restore the historic East Lodge, providing better facilities and a lively programme of events. These events will celebrate the cemetery’s history and natural environment while involving a wide range of people, especially community groups who often miss out.

The project, run with the Friends of Nunhead Cemetery, has received nearly £4 million from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The project will include:

  • restoring the East Lodge
  • replacing the Friends of Nunhead Cemetery (FONC) cabin

It will also put in place the:

  • interpretation plan
  • digital strategy
  • woodland management plan
  • activity plan
  • volunteering strategy

Activity plan and volunteering strategy

A new role has been created to lead the activity plan and volunteering strategy. These will be designed to involve people from all parts of the community and will include:

  • oral history sessions
  • practical woodland management sessions
  • exhibitions and art events

Design approval

The restoration design by Roger Mears Architects has been approved with both planning permission and listed building consent.

Latest updates

The works have started at Nunhead Cemetery’s East Lodge. This includes restoration of the Grade II listed building and the installation of a new modular building that will support volunteering and community use.

There will be a range of free and exciting activities, including:

  • mindfulness walks
  • seasonal evening events
  • nature-based volunteering
  • hands-on heritage sessions to share stories of those buried in the cemetery

These activities will explore four main themes:

  • health, wellbeing and mindfulness
  • connecting with nature
  • uncovering heritage and untold stories
  • remembering and reflecting

Funding

This project has secured funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Garfield Weston Foundation and the Pilgrim Trust (for the delivery phase).
