Make an appointment
You must book an appointment with us at least 48 hours before you visit Southwark Archives. This allows us to make sure that the searchroom is ready, and that the documents and equipment you need are available for you.
Due to issues with the lighting on 28 November 2024, we are unable to fetch documents from the archive store until further notice. You can still make an appointment to use the materials and computers in the searchroom.
We are unable to retrieve materials from our storage areas on demand. You must make an appointment to access:
- all original archive materials, including electoral registers
- our collections of microfilm, microfiche and audio-visual materials
- PCs for conducting online family or local history research.
We can set aside up to 10 volumes or items for you in advance of your visit.
How to book
-
To book an appointment email archives@southwark.gov.uk. Put ‘Making an appointment’ in the subject line. You can also call us on 020 7525 0232.
-
In the email or when you call, tell us:
- when you would like to visit
- what you would like to use
- if you have a deadline
- if you have accessibility requirements
- if you want to book a computer
- if you need help using records or equipment
- if this is your first experience with Southwark Archives or archives in general
This information allows us to offer you an introduction and any extra help you may need.
-
We’ll let you know if there are any issues with your request.
Sometimes we cannot give access to records and archive materials because the material or equipment is already booked, the records are too fragile, only available as copies or stored off-site.
-
Once your appointment is confirmed, we will notify you of the date and time either by phone or email. Do not make travel arrangements until you have received our confirmation.
