Brimmington Park Sports

Background

To improve the park's sports pitches and facilities, the proposed upgrades include:

  • the new high-quality 3G Astroturf all-weather football pitches will have the potential to be configured as five 5-a-side pitches
  • the refurbished sports centre will provide changing rooms, an event/activity room and have a low-energy, sustainable heating system
  • sound barriers that will reduce noise disturbance to local residences
  • a free-to-use Toro interactive football facility
  • removal of hard surfaces and an increase in green space
  • enhanced plants that are great for wildlife
  • more trees
  • improved entrances to the park

The first public consultation was held in 2019 with a second consultation in 2020.

Latest update

The design is being updated. It is estimated that construction will begin in autumn/winter 2025.

Cemetery Conservation Management Plans

Nunhead Cemetery Conservation Management Plan (CMP)

Conservation Management Plans (CMPs) are a management resource that reviews the heritage, ecology, landscape, visitor experience, and tree/woodlands for each cemetery. 

The consultation for Nunhead Cemetery CMP has been completed and the CMP has been adopted by the council.

Latest update

We are preparing for the public consultations on the Camberwell Old Cemetery CMP and the Camberwell New Cemetery CMP, which will occur in 2024. 

Consort Park/Dr Harold Moody Park

Background

The first public consultation was held in early 2020, the second in spring 2021, and the third in summer 2022.

A masterplan was created with the local community and includes:

  • merging Consort Park and Dr Harold Moody Park, creating more parkland, and removing part of the road and parking spaces
  • refurbishing the play area in Dr Harold Moody Park, and increasing the amount of play equipment, as well as improving it for children with disabilities
  • making Consort Park better for wildlife by planting 22 new trees, a dense urban forest of 105 small trees and shrubs, plants and wildflower meadows
  • improving access for people with disabilities with wider pathways and removal of gates, due to the result of an Equalities Impact Assessment
  • a new pump track for skating, fitness climbing 'trees', additional table tennis table and chess table in Dr Harold Moody Park
  • additional seats and picnic benches

Planning permission was granted for this work. Construction of phase one is estimated to start in autumn/winter 2024

East Lodge at Nunhead Cemetery

Background

The East Lodge (Listed Building Grade II) has been on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register since 1988 and is now in a state of serious decay. 

The first public consultation to address this was held between January and March 2022. 

Interim structural works, completed in October 2022, stabilised the building and made it safe until the main restoration project can begin.

In May 2024 after a successful development phase, Southwark Council and Friends of Nunhead Cemetery secured funding for the delivery phase. Roger Mears Architects’ design for the restoration has received planning and listed building consent; search for application numbers 21/AP/2274 and 21/AP/2275 on our online planning register. 

Planning consent was granted for the schemes’ landscape proposals and non-material amendments; search for application numbers 23/AP/3589 and 23/AP/3590 (Listed Building Consent) and for a new FONC Cabin 23/AP/2875 on our online planning register.

Peckham Rye Adventure Playground

Background

The playground will be upgraded with new play equipment, paths and surfacing. 

The first consultation was held in January 2023.

Construction works are expected to start in 2024.

Limesford Road wall

Background

The Nunhead Cemetery boundary wall along Limesford Road needs updating and repairs. Works include: 

  • reducing the height of the existing cemetery boundary wall to ground level
  • building a new wall in front of the existing wall to provide added support and reduce the risk of its collapse

Latest updates

Repair work started in June 2024. The construction works are programmed to be completed, subject to delays, on 11 April 2025. 

Nursery Row Park

Background

Funding was received for targeted improvements to the park. The planned works will focus on improving the entrance from East Street and the two play areas. 

Latest updates

A consultation report is being prepared. 

An application to Southwark Council Planning Department for a certificate of lawful development was submitted in September. 

Tendering for a landscape contractor to deliver the improvement works will occur in the autumn/winter. 

Works will commence on-site in late spring or early summer 2025

Outdoor cooking trial in Burgess Park

Background

Following conversations with residents and other local groups, we've installed a new, trial electricity-powered outdoor cooking facility. The cooking area contains three electric hotplates and four picnic benches. 

It will be open daily until 27 October, from 10am to 7pm when the electricity will automatically switch off.

Ellen Brown Adventure

Background

The playground  in need of upgrading with new play equipment, paths and surfacing. The first phase of the project to improve the Ellen Brown Centre building has been completed. The second phase is to improve the outdoor play facilities including the play equipment and landscape.
