Ticketed events in parks

Why we have ticketed events in parks

Parks are one of Southwark’s most popular and visited attractions. They host over 100 events every year, including a wide range of both free and income-generating events.

Event organisers sometimes hire areas in our parks for large, ticketed events. These areas are unavailable for normal public use while the event is happening. We agree to this because of the benefits these events bring.

Culture close to home

We want local people to be able to come together to enjoy music, theatre and art in their neighbourhoods, not have to travel into the West End or beyond.

Opportunities for local people and businesses

We encourage event organisers to buy products and services from local businesses and employ staff from the local area. This ensures that the community benefits directly from the event.

Funding for free council and community events

The hire fee generates income for the council. We use this to pay for free events for residents and to subsidise and support community events.

After more than a decade of reductions in government funding for councils, this important source of funding allows us to run a parks and events service that might otherwise have been lost.

Have your say

We know that using parts of our parks for these events can have a negative impact on some residents. That’s why we consult you on the plans and ask you to help us find ways to reduce any negative impact.

We must consult on all major events, as set out in our outdoor events policy
