Kundalini yoga

Who the course is for

Our Kundalini yoga course is for learners of any age 19+ and any level of fitness and experience.

What you’ll learn

Among the different branches of yoga, Kundalini is considered the most powerful and beneficial in terms of spiritual, physical and emotional wellbeing. It is often referred to as the yoga of awareness as it is a very deep practice involving posture work, breathing and chanting to activate all the senses.

By encouraging connection to the root chakra (or energy point) at the base of the spine and enabling the flow of energy to the other chakras, Kundalini yoga can bring about spiritual, physical, and emotional change, which can enhance our relationship with ourselves and our surroundings.

This course will help you gain an insight into the Kundalini branch of yoga and:

  • how to set up the body for safe and effective exercise
  • how to connect the mind with the body and breath to bring about clarity of movement and thought
  • how to efficiently and effectively stretch and strengthen major muscle groups and mobilise major joints
  • how to adapt the level of challenge to suit your own level of fitness and experience
  • simple, useful tools to aid wellbeing and help manage everyday stresses

How the course is taught

Learners can exercise on a mat or a chair.

Each session will start with an activity to focus the mind and some warm up exercises. This will be followed by a kriya - a series of stretches/postures - followed by a relaxation, before finishing with a short meditation and tuning out. No two weeks will be the same.

Your tutor will demonstrate the practice and techniques and monitor and assess throughout, ensuring that exercises are carried out safely.

You will be encouraged to ‘lose yourself’ in your practice, working to your own level and ability.

Materials you’ll need:

  • you can bring your own yoga mat and/or block or you can use ours
  • a light blanket or shawl to keep yourself warm during relaxation
  • a cushion if you find it difficult to sit cross-legged
  • stretchy, comfortable clothing
  • a bottle of water

After the course

Learners will be encouraged to continue practicing for their physical and mental wellbeing and will be challenged to enable this. This can be done in your own time. You may also choose to progress to a course with another provider.

Course location

  • Thomas Calton Centre, Alpha Street, SE15 4NX.
