Southwark Music Service

We work with our partners in Southwark to create diverse musical opportunities for children and young people living and learning in Southwark.

Our vibrant Saturday Music Centre at St. Saviour’s and St. Olaves incorporates the:

  • Mini Music Makers
  • Saturday Centre

Saturday Music Centre

We offer a large variety of instrumental lessons for pupils from school year three and above who live or go to school in Southwark. You can find out more about us online at Saturday Music Centre.

Students will get a combination of instrumental, ensemble, choir, percussion and theory lessons. 

The Saturday Music Centre provides students with a broad music education that will:

  • enhance their enjoyment and appreciation of music

  • instil a greater understanding of music making in different contexts

  • enable children to play with confidence in different settings

  • increase pupils’ musical skills 

When ready and by agreement with your child’s tutor, students can be entered for public examinations, currently provided by The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and Trinity College London.

What is expected

Your child does not need experience to attend the Saturday Centre.

Pupils must commit to attending regularly and practice between lessons.

What lessons are available

Tuition is available in:

  • brass

  • guitar

  • keyboard

  • drum kit

  • singing

  • strings

  • woodwind

Students have the opportunity to participate in ensembles at the Saturday Centre.

They can also study:

  • Gamelan
  • Samba
  • African drumming

It takes place at:

  • St Saviour’s and St Olave’s Church of England School, New Kent Road, London, SE1 4AN

  • Time: 9.15 and 12.30​

How to apply

There is a waiting list. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis and depends on availability of instruments.

We do not accept applications for children who are not yet in year two or after your child has entered year eight.

Buy or borrow an instrument

Assisted Instrument Purchase Scheme

Pupils may be able to purchase new instruments without paying the 20% VAT through their school, by using the Assisted Instrument Purchase Scheme. 

The school will then pay the full cost, reclaim the discount and pass the instrument on to the pupil.

Bursary Scheme for Academic Year

Bursary Scheme for Academic Year

The bursary is available to those eligible for Pupil Premium. It pays 50% of your centre fees for the year. 

Pupil Premium eligibility will be checked by Southwark Council. The funding is limited.

Centre for Young Musicians (CYM)

Centre for Young Musicians (CYM)

The Centre for Young Musicians provides high-quality progressive music training, with a range of performance opportunities for more than 400 children and young people aged 5 to 18 on Saturdays during term time.
