Right to Buy

The Right to Buy scheme gives council tenants a chance to buy the home they rent from us at a discounted price. Find out how.

Buyer beware

Some companies or people may offer you money to help you buy your home through the Right to Buy scheme.

They offer to support you through the buying process for free and with no no financial risk.

What they may not tell you is that, by offering you cash, they may asking you to enter into a ‘deferred-sale agreement’.

This may:

  • force you to leave your home as soon as the property has been bought
  • or having to repay the money they gave you within 5 years

Sadly, this often results in a tenant being left homeless. If this happens we will not offer you another tenancy.

You should think very carefully before accepting one of these cash offers.

Do not sign anything that you're not entirely clear about or happy with. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Get independent legal advice from a solicitor, or the Citizens Advice Bureau before you accept this kind of agreement.

If you are considering it you should check:

  • if the solicitor, money lender (including individuals) and any companies involved are legitimate and registered online
  • feedback from others who have used their services
