Damp and mould

Damp and mould

Different things can cause damp and mould in your home.

Types of damp and mould

Condensation damp

This is the most common type. It is caused when moisture inside the home cools and condenses onto colder parts of the buildings. For example, window frames, corners and low points on walls behind sofas or wardrobes.

Rising damp

This is moisture from the ground that rises up through parts of the buildings in contact with the ground. For example, walls and floors. It's usually found in older properties.

Penetrating damp

This is water that gets into the home from outside due to disrepair in the walls, roofs, windows or floors.

Mould

This is a type of fungus that grows in moist environments, typically caused by condensation or penetrating damp. Mould can cause adverse health effects as well as damage to buildings.
