Move a relative's remains

How to move a relative's remains. Apply for a exhumation licence

Apply for a exhumation licence

The process of moving a person's remains from a grave is called an 'exhumation'. For various reasons, exhumations take a long time to arrange and can be expensive.

Exhumation of a grave can only take place once the Home Office has issued a licence. It will list conditions to be observed.

If the grave is in consecrated grounds, like those blessed by the Church of England, you must also get the church's permission first. The representative for the Church of England is the Bishop of Southwark. You can contact the Diocese of Southwark.

If the exhumation happens, an Environmental Health Officer must be there. They ensure there's no risk to public health and that all rules are followed.
