Seven projects in Southwark won at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) London Awards

  • It’s the most wins for local projects among any of the other London boroughs
  • Four awards went to new community and learning spaces, including Rotherhithe Primary School

Southwark Council is proud to share that Rotherhithe Primary School was recognised as ‘a very special place of learning’ as a winner at this year’s RIBA London Awards.

The design team created a school in a garden, with greenery on all sides where there are light and airy classrooms. The final result is a nurturing environment for the children with plenty of space for the school community to come together.

The school is among three other winning projects in Southwark with serving the local community at their heart:

  • London South Bank University Hub – 20,500 square metres of teaching space where students are taught practical and professional skills on site
  • The Africa Centre – a new home for the centre’s many exhibitions, lectures and cultural events on Great Suffolk Street
  • The Tree House – Elephant Park’s pavilion with viewing platform and community space

Cllr Helen Dennis, Cabinet Member for New Homes & Sustainable Development, said: “Wherever you go in Southwark, you will see cutting edge buildings that have clearly been designed around the people who live, work and study in our borough.

"We are thrilled that local design picked up the most accolades at this year’s RIBA London Awards. We are particularly proud of our new Rotherhithe Primary School as the only school build to win an award across London. It truly is an exceptional space for learning that centres children’s health and wellbeing."

Other winners from Southwark were a housing block on Southwark Street and two private residential projects.

The RIBA London Awards are part of a wider program that highlights the best in contemporary architecture. Winning a regional award is a step towards the national RIBA awards, where these projects will compete with other top designs from across the UK.
