Early indication of the results from Southwark’s schools show that the borough’s A-level students have exceeded national figures between 1.3 to 7.4 percentage points across the various grade ranges.
In England, the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) said this year’s national A-level results would broadly be similar to summer 2023. Grading happened as usual after a return to pre-pandemic standards last year.
Southwark’s provisional results are up from 2023 across the range of grade boundaries, including the largest improvement (3.4 percentage points) in the number of Southwark exam entries being awarded the top grades of A*-A (from 28.1 per cent in 2023 to 31.5 per cent this year).
While improvements were largely also seen at national level, the extent of improvement experienced by Southwark across the board was far larger. For the percentage of entries awarded an A-level pass grade, compared with 2023, nationally there was a decrease of 0.1 percentage point.
Cllr Jasmine Ali, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Education, said: “A huge congratulations to all our A-level students! You have made Southwark so proud with this set of results, surpassing the national average in every single grade range. It’s nothing short of incredible and testament to all the hard work of teachers, students and parents right across the borough.
