Southwark’s Dale Road and Rolls Road resurfacing works have been made possible by HS2 funding

Southwark Council has received £189,000 in funding from this DfT fund for the current financial year, which has been used to resurface Dale Road between the junctions of john Ruskin Street and Hilingdon Street, and also resurface subsided areas along Marlborough Grove,Rowcross Street and sections of Rolls Road(which was built over old railway sidings). Southwark will receive an additional £189,000 in funding for the 2024-2025 financial year, which will be used to resurface Walworth Road from its junction with Larcom Street to outside number 221 Walworth Road.

In October the Department for Transport (DfT) announced £8.3 billion in additional funding for road resurfacing and maintenance works for local highway networks across the UK. This funding was made possible by reallocated HS2 funding, and will be made available over the period 2023-2024 and for the next 10 years.

The resurfacing works on Dale Road were completed in February 2024 and Rolls Road was completed in March 2024. Dale Road is a classified link road through a dense residential area with buses every 15 minutes. Rolls Road is a B Road serving a school and the ambulance station.

A further £189,000 in funding from DfT in the 2024-2025 financial year will be used to resurface around 162m of carriageway on the A215 Walworth Road. This section of the street is located around the junction with Manor Road where there are five bus routes and many retail outlets.
