Southwark celebrates Car Free Day as the number of street parties increases this year

Southwark residents reclaimed their streets and celebrated World Car Free Day 2024, by organising 10 play streets and street parties across the borough between Friday 20 and Sunday 22 September.

The national initiative supports the council’s ambitious Streets for People strategy to improve the air quality in Southwark.

Cabinet Member for Clean Air, Streets and Waste, James McAsh and the Mayor of Southwark, Saima Ali, visited Badsworth Road, Camberwell for a street party over on Saturday 21 September where residents had come together to organise a community fun day and to help raise money for local children’s charity Camberwell After School Project (C.A.S.P), where there was a range of fun, free games and activities for families and children to enjoy socialising and space to play.

These were resident-organised events where neighbours on a street agreed together, and with the council, to close their street temporarily to through-traffic.

Councillor James McAsh, Cabinet Member for Clean Air, Streets and Waste, said: “It’s been wonderful to see more residents get involved with this year’s World Car Free Day with more than double the amount of street parties than last year.

“World Car Free Day is a great opportunity for residents to come together and connect with their neighbours. It’s great to see children and families of all ages having fun and enjoying space to play and socialise and highlights the benefits of reducing cars for our environment and supports our commitment to improve residents’ quality of life and take action on climate change, making Southwark a healthier, cleaner place for everyone”.

World Car Free Day is celebrated worldwide annually on 22 September and aims to bring communities together, create safer spaces for children to play, and reduce reliance on cars.

London Play is a registered charity that supports the implementation of Play Streets. Their website explains procedures and further resources they can provide.
