Victory Community Park reopens to the community

Southwark Council is excited to announce the completion of £1,050,000 worth of improvement works to upgrade Victory Community Park in Walworth.

The ambitious project set out to transform the local park into a vibrant, inclusive space for all to enjoy. The council hopes to increase visitor numbers after a 2019 survey showed lower usage levels in comparison to similar parks in the borough. Victory Community Park is one of over 130 parks in the borough, which includes 30 Green Flag Awards which stands as a testament to the relentless efforts made by volunteers, community groups, park staff and contractors, Idverde, in maintaining well-managed and welcoming open spaces for park-goers.

The work also recreates east and west connections around and through the park, as part of East Walworth Green Links, an initiative created by local friends groups to promote alternative ways of travelling between The Elephant and Castle and Burgess Park, visiting the smaller parks on the way.

The refurbishment includes a newly upgraded ball court, a refurbished play area with new equipment, a new table tennis area with seating area, and enhanced accessibility with improved entrances and pathways. These upgrades are complemented by extensive landscaping efforts that will introduce a variety of new, wildflower meadows and species rich turf boosting the park’s biodiversity and creating a greener, more sustainable environment.

The improvement works are a direct response to community feedback, gathered through multiple consultation events and meetings with The Friends of Victory Community Park and Elba Place Nature Garden group. Residents expressed a desire for a safer, more welcoming space that could serve as a hub for local activities and events. Southwark’s design team has worked closely with the community to ensure that the final plan meets these needs, incorporating features that enhance both the functionality and beauty of the park.

Councillor Portia Mwangangye, Cabinet Member for Parks and Open Spaces, said: “It’s amazing to see the changes to Victory Community Park. From the new ball court to the boost to biodiversity, the park has come a long way and is sure to become a favourite with locals.

“The upgrade is a shining example of what can be achieved when a community comes together to shape the future of their local area. We are proud of the work that has been done here and look forward to seeing the park become a thriving centre of activity for the East Walworth community.”

The Victory Community Park improvements aligns with the council’s broader aim to improve green spaces across the borough. The council recently completed improvements to Pelier Park, Dickens Fields and Cossall Park.
