Councils welcome £2bn of funding to secure the future of council housing

A coalition of councils has welcomed the Government's announcement of a £2bn injection for new social and affordable homes in England.

Responding to the announcement on behalf of a coalition of over 100 councils, Cllr Kieron Williams, Leader of Southwark Council, said: “After years of neglect from previous governments, our research found that 71% of local authorities had expected to pause, cancel or delay council housebuilding projects.

"We are delighted that the government is investing to help get council housing back on track, but there is more to do to make council housing sustainable for generations to come.

"Our coalition of more than 100 councils will continue to work with the government to build the long-term financial stability councils need to deliver for Britain.”

The Securing the Future of Council Housing coalition has also called for a reset to our broken council housing financing deal with government, and a bold new national investment programme for refurbishment of our outdated council housing stock.
