Southwark Council has appointed BAM Nuttal Ltd as the contractor to carry out the long-awaited transformation of Peckham Rye Station Square.
The council is working in collaboration with the Greater London Authority and Network Rail on the project which will see the square go from a series of narrow and dark passageways, to a more light, vibrant and spacious civic square.
This project has been in the pipeline for a number of years with communities and residents being involved in contributing ideas for the square which many feel passionately about. This is the final phase in the scheme that was granted planning consent in 2016.
The newly-renovated façade of the Grade II listed 1860s station building will be enhanced by new surroundings while the dilapidated 1930s arcade will be removed in order to reinstate the original forecourt with planting, seating and lighting and expose and bring new focus to the majestic arches along the north and south side of the square.
The arches will be refurbished to provide new premises for local and independent businesses to trade, bringing more sense of community, atmosphere and life to the square.
The first phase of the project was refurbishment and extension of the Blenheim Grove corner building which is now complete and ready to accommodate new businesses.
The final businesses remaining within the 1930s arcade will be leaving over the coming months to allow demolition of the arcade to start this summer, with the new square set to be completed next year.
The council’s transformation of Peckham Rye Station Square will be further complimented by a major station upgrade planned by Network Rail improving not just the station environment but ensuring that the station itself is accessible by all and has capacity for the coming decades.
