20 mile per hour scheme

A project to reduce vehicle speeds to 20mph in locations across the borough

This work aims to:

  • reduce vehicle speeds across the borough
  • make crossing the road safer
  • make walking and cycling safer

Research shows that on urban roads with low traffic speeds, any 1mph reduction in average speed can reduce the collision frequency by around 6%. So even a modest reduction of 1mph average speed could reduce the number of collisions by 56 collisions a year in Southwark.

There's also clear evidence confirming the greater chance of survival of pedestrians at lower speeds.

Dulwich Wood Park

Following consultation with local residents and community groups, improvements were made to Dulwich Wood Park and College Road. These include:

  • a new cycle lane
  • widening of the existing cycle lane
  • a raised pedestrian crossing
  • a raised zebra crossing
  • widening of central islands

Forest Hill Road

Following consultation with local residents, we made the following improvements:

  • a pedestrian crossing point
  • traffic calming measures west of Honour Oak Rise
  • a zebra crossing to provide a safer crossing location for schoolchildren

Sydenham Hill

We made changes to Sydenham Hill to reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety for all road users. These included:

  • traffic calming measures such as raised tables and carriageway narrowing
  • improved pedestrian crossings
  • segregated cycle lanes
  • wider pavements
