Parking in council housing estates

Parking permits, enforcement and schemes in Southwark housing estates.

Many of our housing estates were not designed for cars, so we have rules for parking on them.

If you live on a housing estate, read how to apply for different parking permits for:

  • estate residents
  • visitors
  • doctors
  • carers
  • health workers
  • businesses

Parking schemes

Parking schemes mark where you can park and where you must not. Areas where parking is not allowed are marked with yellow lines and cross-hatched yellow lines. You must not park on the footway or in front of dropped kerbs.

You must have a valid virtual or physical permit to park during scheme hours. These hours can differ between estates.

Not all estates have parking schemes. To find out about parking on your specific estate, email estatesparking@southwark.gov.uk.

If your estate has a parking scheme, make sure your family and visitors know the rules.

We will consider requests for dedicated disabled spaces. However, a space is only guaranteed with strong medical evidence. We aim to provide parking for disabled residents and visitors where possible.

In rare cases, we may grant exemptions to parking restrictions. We are not responsible for anyone who does not follow an estate's parking rules.

Parking on an estate

You can only park in designated bays or areas on the estate.

You cannot park oversized vehicles that exceed these dimensions:

  • height: 6 feet 6 inches (2 metres)
  • width: 6 feet (1.83 metres)
  • length: 16 feet (4.8 metres)
  • weight: 7.5 tonnes

We may grant exceptions for vehicles used only for social and domestic purposes.

Your vehicle must:

  • have current vehicle tax
  • have a valid MOT certificate
  • be roadworthy
  • not be damaged

Virtual parking permits

Virtual permits make parking easier and more efficient. Once you apply and get confirmation, your permit info goes straight to our enforcement team. This saves paper and money on office supplies.

You must register for a virtual permit to park on your estate. Priority is given to local residents, but carers may also be included if space allows.

The first permit is free for eligible residents. However, we cannot guarantee a parking space, as these are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Abandoned vehicles

Do not leave damaged or crash-damaged vehicles on the estate or council land.

We offer a free service for residents to surrender their old vehicles. This frees up parking spaces. It also reduces the number of abandoned vehicles on our estates.
