Apply to rent a garage

How to apply for a council garage.

Garage rent periods and prices

There is a minimum rental period of 12 weeks, with six weeks of rent due in advance at sign-up. The rental price rates are listed below.

For details on how to make your rental payments, visit garage rental payments and refunds.

For details on what happens if you do not make your rental payments, visit non-payment of garage rental.

The formula to work out the monthly figure for 2024/2025 is:

Total weekly (relevant rent plus additional charge if applicable) multiplied by 53 divided by 12.

Standard rate: £24.70 per week.

This applies if you're a:

  • secure council tenant paying us rent directly for your main home address
  • leaseholder paying us service charges directly for your main home address
  • freeholder paying us service charges directly for your main home address

To get the standard rate, you must be a named person on the rent or service charge account. You must also be living in the property you're applying from.

Concessionary rate: £19.70 a week.

This applies if you're eligible for the standard rate and you're any of the following:

  • registered as disabled with a mobility allowance for transport
  • over 70 years of age
  • a Blue Badge holder

The concessionary rate is limited to one per household.

You can apply for the concessionary rate.

Private rate: £45.30 a week.

This applies to anyone not listed above.

Extra weekly service charges

There are extra weekly service charges that may apply to some garage units:

  • £6.20 if there is more space than the average garage
  • £6.20 if there is extra parking outside the garage
  • £0.50 if there is a water tap near the garage

Details of extra service charges will be outlined in your Garage Licence Agreement.
