Apply to close a road for an event

What you'll need to do if you want to close a street for an event.

Anyone organising a community event can apply to have a road closed. Community events can include:

  • sporting events
  • street parties
  • parades

Usually, requests come from large organisations but we’ll consider all applications carefully.

Demonstrations are dealt with by the police, not the council. You must contact the police if you’re planning a demonstration so that they can make arrangements.

What you'll need

If your event requires closing the road to traffic, you’ll need a traffic regulation order from us.

Apply for a temporary traffic order for special events by downloading an application form (PDF, 51KB). You should read the guidance notes attached to the form before applying.

You also need to:

  • give at least six weeks' notice
  • give up to three months' notice for larger events that will close main routes or several roads
  • get written permission from the police
  • pay for any costs involved with closing the road if you're the organiser

What we'll do

We’ll notify the public of any road closures. We will put up signs on the streets to let people know the street will be closed.
