Gritting roads and pavements in icy weather

Stay safe in freezing weather. How we grit the roads and what you can do.

When the temperature falls below 0°C and there's a risk of ice and snow, we lay grit on roads and pavements.

We’ll do the gritting in the following order of priority:

  1. Roads with a steep slope and north-facing.
  2. Roads that must be kept open to allow essential services.
  3. Priority roads in and out of the council area and main bus routes.
  4. All other roads.
  5. Certain pedestrian locations.
  6. C10 cycle route.

Public salt bins

We provide salt bins in areas that are difficult to access in icy conditions. This allows residents and drivers to treat the roads and pavements themselves.

The salt can be put on the ground to prevent people and vehicles from slipping on ice.

When using a salt bin:

  • sprinkle salt on paths, roads and steps before freezing weather comes
  • never use boiling water to melt ice, because the water can turn to ice
  • if it has snowed, put salt over the first layer of snow
  • use about a tablespoon of salt per square metre
  • do not get salt on plants and trees
  • remember to put salt on your steps and any steep areas

We do not provide salt to private individuals or businesses but they can buy it from builders’ merchants and DIY stores.
