Weed control and disposal

Tell us when weeds get out of control. Find out what to do if you find Japanese knotweed.

We're responsible for making sure that all streets, pavements and housing estates are kept weed free.

We use these methods to remove weeds:

  • manual
  • mechanical
  • chemical

Never cut, mow or trim Japanese knotweed as it can spread it.

Japanese knotweed

Japanese knotweed looks similar to bamboo. Its leaves are heart shaped and it has white flowers in autumn.

Due to its strong roots, Japanese knotweed:

  • spreads extremely quickly
  • prevents native plant life from growing
  • can damage structures
  • can reach up to 3 metres high

See a description and photographs of Japanese knotweed on the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) website.

We do not offer a removal service for Japanese knotweed. If you have it on your property, contact a private contractor for advice.

Do not put it in general waste bins or mix it with garden waste.

It must be removed and thrown away by a licenced waste control operator.

If you notice Japanese knotweed on a housing estate in Southwark, contact your resident services officer or email environment@southwark.gov.uk.
