Electric vehicles

Where to park and charge your electric vehicle. How to request an electric vehicle charging point.

Most of Southwark has been declared an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA). This means we must address the air pollution problem in the area.

To encourage electric vehicle use, we've installed electric vehicle charging points (EVCPs) into streetlights across Southwark.

The charging points are part of the Go Ultra Low City Scheme (GULCS) project. This is managed by London councils, the Mayor of London and Transport for London on behalf of the Office of Low Emission Vehicles.

Road emissions make up around half of total air pollution in London, causing thousands of deaths a year.

Request a new charge point

You can ask for a lamppost charge point to be installed on your street. You must only submit the form once.

What happens next

You’ll get an automated reply to let you know that we’ve received your request.

We’ll prioritise applications based on:

  • electric vehicle ownership (we’ll need to see proof)
  • date of application
  • site suitability

If it is not possible to install a charge point on the lamppost outside your property we may find a different location.

If we agree it could take 16 to 24 weeks to install. This does not mean you'll get a designated parking bay.

You cannot get a conversion to fit a charge point to a lamppost outside your house.

Parking your electric vehicle

Check the signs at charging points for parking charges.

Southwark Council is not responsible for charging or managing EVCPs.

If you have a resident's parking permit you can get discounted parking for an electric vehicle. You’ll get a 75% discount each year.

If you are not eligible for an on-street parking permit the rules will be the same even if your vehicle is electric.

You must never run an electric cable from your house to your vehicle over the pavement. It is extremely dangerous.

If you have a designated parking space outside your property, you can install an EVCP without permission from Council.

Make sure you follow the electric vehicle manufacturer’s advice on installation and use.
