Peckham Rye Station Square
Read about the new public square, improved station and new spaces for local traders in Peckham Palms and Blenheim Grove.
The area in front of Peckham Rye Station has long been recognised by the community as needing improvement. We have been working with the Greater London Authority and Network Rail to transform the space.
This project will:
- demolish the 1930s arcade
- create a vibrant public square
- reveal the restored Grade II listed station building
- create new units for local and independent businesses
- make the buildings and spaces around the station cleaner and safer
- provide a good sense of arrival for transport users
- strengthen the supports to platform 3
Work so far
The work is being carefully managed to minimise disruption to businesses and commuters. For the project to go ahead, the following processes had to be carried out.
In 2016 planning permission was granted.
In 2017 we obtained a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) for leaseholds in the arcade.
In 2019 we built Peckham Palms to help relocate the arcade’s Afro-Caribbean hair and beauty businesses. The Blenheim Grove corner building was then refurbished.
Current work
Some of the businesses in the arcade are being relocated into the refurbished Blenheim Grove building.
The arcade's demolition will begin in spring 2025, and the forecast completion date for these works is spring 2026.
The pedestrian route through the arcade from Rye Lane to the station will be closed off until the new square is completed.
