Peckham's character and heritage
Information about how we are preserving the character and heritage of Peckham as we develop the area.
Peckham has a historic town centre and buildings dating from the Victorian period and earlier.
Different cultures, generations of migrants, and creatives and entrepreneurs, help to give Peckham its unique character.
Heritage is central to Peckham’s thriving arts scene and organisations including Mountview Academy, Theatre Peckham and the Bussey Building are based there.
We want to preserve Peckham’s heritage, nurture its culture, and secure a strong future for everyone in the area.
We are preserving Peckham’s character and heritage by:
- supporting the Peckham Townscape Heritage Initiative which funds repairs and the restoration of historic buildings in Peckham
- supporting the restoration and improvement of Peckham Rye Station
- adding the Old Mill Building and the Jones & Higgins clock tower to our Local List, which gives added protection to heritage buildings in the borough
- developing the draft Peckham Area Character Study which gives guidance about the area’s character in respect of renovation and development projects
