Legal protection is given to trees with a tree preservation order (TPO), or if they are in a conservation area. Unauthorised work is a criminal offence.

Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs)

You need to apply to us to do works to trees with a TPO. This includes:

  • felling
  • pruning
  • reduction
  • crown lifting

Trees in conservation areas

Trees within a conservation area receive special protection. There is a preference for protecting those that positively contribute to the character and appearance of the conservation area. If you want to work on a tree in a conservation area, you must give us 6 weeks written notice. Read more about trees in conservation areas.
