What to do if you cannot look after your dog. Rules on microchipping. Report lost or stray dogs.

If you cannot look after your dog

Contact any of the following: 

They may be able to help:

  • with training 
  • find the dog a good home

Dog microchipping

It’s the law to get your dog microchipped and registered by the time they’re 8 weeks old.

If you do not your dog microchipped within 21 days if ordered to, you could be fined up to £500. 

Some organisations offer free microchipping services, like the Dogs Trust and Battersea.

Make sure you keep your details up to date on the microchip database you're registered with.

You can find all databases on GOV.UK. Contact them to make any changes.

Report a lost or stray dog

Call the police on 999 if the dog is acting dangerously.

Lost dogs

If you’ve lost your dog, contact Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, local vets and charity vet hospitals.

If it’s been microchipped contact your microchip database to say your dog is missing. 

Make sure they have your correct contact details.

Stray dog

If the dog has a dog tag with contact details get in touch with the owner.

If the dog does not have a tag you can:

  • call us to collect it on 0800 952 4444, between Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm, including holidays
  • report it to Battersea

Contact the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999 to report any other types of stray animal.
