Mental health training

We run regular, fully-funded mental health and suicide prevention training for all Southwark organisations who work with or come into contact with residents.

Who are the courses for

The courses are for people who work or volunteer with Southwark residents.

This could include:

  • members of faith and voluntary or community groups
  • local businesses
  • council staff

You don’t need existing knowledge of mental health or suicide prevention. You just need an interest in your own mental health and supporting others.

Mental health First Aid courses

The courses teach you to:

  • spot the signs of mental health issues
  • offer initial help
  • guide a person towards support
  • listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis

We offer the following fully funded courses:

Mental Health First Aider (MHFAider®)

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a 2-day face-to-face training course which teaches people how to identify, understand and help someone who may be experiencing poor mental health. We fully fund this course, worth £325 per person.

Mental Health Aware (half-day course)

This half-day introductory course raises awareness of mental health and offers information about how best to start a supportive conversation with someone who may be experiencing poor mental health. We fully fund this course, worth £125 per person.

Mental Health First Aider Refresher (half-day course)

This half-day course gives previously trained MHFAiders a chance to renew skills and update their knowledge of mental health support. On completion, participants access 3 years of MHFAider® Support and Benefits. We fully fund this course, worth £150 per person. Adult and youth versions of these courses are available.

Suicide First Aid courses

Most people who are thinking about suicide don’t know who to speak to. Talking openly to someone considering suicide can give them other options, or the time to rethink their decision.

The training helps you:

  • improve your suicide awareness
  • identify the signs that someone may be having thoughts of suicide
  • to have an appropriate conversation with someone who may be having thoughts of suicide and keep them safe

We offer the following fully-funded courses:

Suicide First Aid- Understanding Suicide Intervention (1-day course)

A 1-day training course which teaches the theory and practice of suicide intervention and can be applied in any professional or personal setting. The course is assured by City & Guilds. This course is fully funded by Southwark Council.

Suicide First Aid Lite (half-day course)

A 3-hour course that gives learners the knowledge and tools to understand that suicide is one of the most preventable deaths, and some basic skills to help someone with thoughts of suicide stay safe. We fully fund the course.
