Age well: older people’s health

In Southwark, we want to ensure everyone has access to the services they need to prevent ill health, helped by early detection and management. Supporting people to maintain their independence for longer is a key strand to tackling inequalities.

This section includes information on the health and wellbeing of adults and older people in Southwark, including conditions such as cancer, dementia and heart disease.

Dementia and neurological conditions

Long-term neurological conditions carry a significant burden to the individual, their families and carers, the NHS, and society as a whole, for example, Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy as well as Parkinson's disease.

The prevalence of diagnosed dementia has been rising in Southwark as well as nationally. Dementia-related emergency hospital admissions are rising with admission rates in Southwark significantly higher than the national and London averages.
