Social and economic factors

A range of social, economic, and environmental factors impact people’s health. These factors are influenced by the local, national, and international distribution of power and resources.

Wider determinants define the extent to which different individuals have the physical, social and personal resources to identify and achieve goals, meet their needs and deal with changes to their circumstances. Wider determinants have a greater influence on health than health care, behaviours or genetics. It is, therefore, an important aspect of public health in terms of informing preventative action and reducing inequality.

Violence against women and girls (VAWG) and domestic abuse

Recorded offences for crimes related to VAWG and domestic abuse, as well as referrals to Southwark’s specialist Domestic Abuse Service, are increasing year-on-year. However, these issues likely affect far more women than the data tell us due to under-reporting.

Together with key partners and stakeholders, we’ve produced documents identifying the local population’s needs. These will be regularly reviewed and updated to ensure that efforts to tackle VAWG and domestic abuse in Southwark remain evidence-based and responsive to the needs of the community.

Food security

The inability to ensure access to healthy and nutritious food has the potential to impact every stage of life, affecting development, wellbeing and life chances. Children in food insecure households are more likely to develop asthma, depression and other chronic conditions. Their growth and development are impaired and learning is poorer.

It's 2 to 3 times more expensive to treat someone who is malnourished in the UK, compared to someone who is properly nourished.

To tackle household food insecurity in Southwark, a coordinated borough-wide approach is required, working at a strategic, community, and individual level with key partners, including the Southwark Food Action Alliance and relevant council departments.

Environment

Our health and wellbeing are strongly influenced by the environment in which we are born, grow, live, work and age. Air pollution is a leading environmental risk factor for morbidity and premature mortality. Since 2003 most of Southwark has been declared an Air Quality Management Area indicating a high concentration of air pollution, which is unlikely to improve in the near future.

Housing

Housing is a significant determinant of both mental and physical health. The health effects of poor housing disproportionately affect vulnerable people. Outcomes of poor housing conditions are associated with illnesses such as eczema, hypothermia and heart disease.
