Bedbugs, fleas, moths

Check what you have to do before and after we treat bedbugs, fleas or moths.

If you’ve booked a treatment there are some steps you need to take before the pest control technician arrives.

If you do not they may not be able to carry out the treatment.

We have the right to cancel treatment if you do not follow our advice.

What you do depends on the pest.

After the treatment you will need to follow more steps. This is to make sure the treatment is effective.

Bedbugs

Before treatment

On the day of your treatment, before we arrive, you must:

  • remove bedding, curtains and soft furnishings and put them in sealed black bin bags
  • keep the sealed bags in rooms that are going to be treated until you can wash them
  • only empty wardrobes and drawers if we ask you to
  • wash them at 60 degrees (check the labels to see if they need a lower temperature or to be dry cleaned)
  • move all furniture away from the walls
  • remove old and worn carpets
  • unplug electrical equipment and remove it from the the floor
  • do not replace beds unless advised

If you live in a house with others, you must arrange access to all bedrooms, otherwise we cannot do the treatment.

After treatment

Try to work out where you might have come into contact with bedbugs to prevent the problem in future.

Fleas

You should arrange to leave the property for at least 2 hours while the treatment is being carried out if you:

  • are pregnant
  • have allergies or asthma
  • have any pets

Before treatment

Before our pest control technician arrives:

  • cover any aquariums and turn off the filtration and aeration system until 6 hours after treatment
  • remove clutter from the infested area
  • unplug all electrical items, move them away from the walls and cover or seal them
  • steam clean or shampoo any carpets and furnishings if possible
  • empty your vacuum cleaner very carefully away from the house
  • put vacuum cleaner bags in a tightly sealed rubbish bag and throw it away
Curtains and other soft furnishings
  • put all long curtains, chair covers, pillows and throws into clean rubbish bags and secure them
  • empty the bags directly into the washing machine
  • once washed and dried, put the curtains into clean, unused rubbish bags and seal, or put into a tumble dryer on a high temperature for at least 40 minutes.
Furniture and carpets
  • vacuum carpets, cracks in the floorboards and upholstered furniture to get rid of fleas, eggs and larvae
  • pull all furniture in infested rooms away from the walls and remove all clutter from underneath it

Flea larvae feed on the poo of adult flea and other organic matter. Make sure you hoover carpets, furniture and floorboards to remove this source of food

Pets
  • use a flea comb regularly and wash bedding at 50 degrees or above every week
  • if your pet is scratching or biting its fur your vet who can recommend treatments
  • bathe your dog or cat using a recommended pet shampoo
  • after bathing your pet comb it with a flea comb

After treatment

Take care on wet floors.

Do not:

  • use treated rooms for 2 to 3 hours or until dry if at all possible
  • let pets into rooms that have been treated until the insecticide is dry

Do not vacuum or sweep treated rooms until either:

  • the day before the next visit from a pest control technician
  • a minimum of 14 days
You should use the treated areas as normal because your presence brings the fleas out and into contact with the insecticide.

If you do not use treated rooms as normal, the fleas will lay dormant.

Moths

Before treatment

To get the most effective treatment you must:

  • clear all floor areas including moving all furniture from the edges of the room
  • vacuum clean all carpets and rugs and clean all carpet-free floor areas
  • empty the vacuum cleaner directly into the bin or change the bag
  • empty and clear cupboards so we can inspect and treat them
  • try to identify the type of moth to help us discover how the moth entered the property
  • find a sample if possible, to show the technician when they arrive
  • remove the source of the problem if the moth is found in foods
  • leave the rooms being treated taking any pets and only return when the insecticide is dry
  • cover fish tanks and electrical appliances

After treatment

Do not:

  • enter the treated rooms for at least 2 hours or until the pest control technician advises
  • vacuum the carpets or clean the treated area for at least 14 days to give the insecticide time to work

The moths should die off gradually after coming into contact with the insecticide.

Our technician will book a follow-up appointment.
