The Aylesham Centre

Green spaces, public spaces and climate change

Green spaces and play areas

The plans include:

  • public and civic spaces for socialising and community events
  • a network of green links, which will interconnect the site
  • a new town centre park, Aylesham Gardens, which will be roughly the size of nearby Peckham Square
  • new plants and trees in public spaces

Public spaces

The majority of public spaces on the site will be the responsibility of the landowner, Berkeley Homes.

The cost of maintaining the spaces will be covered by a service charge on all residents and businesses on the development.

How the proposals will affect local views and daylight in nearby homes

Berkeley Homes will submit a full daylight and sunlight assessment as part of their planning application. This will show how the scheme will impact light in neighbouring homes and open spaces. It will look at specific local views such as the Bussey Building and Franks.

The daylight and sunlight assessment will be reviewed when the planning application is being considered.

The development will be visible from many points throughout Peckham, including the Bussey Building and Franks, but it will not interrupt any protected sightlines from Nunhead Cemetery.

Climate change impact

The planning application will go through a ‘Whole Life Carbon Assessment’. This assessment will:

  • show the carbon impact of the scheme
  • put measures in place to limit the scheme’s impact on the environment

These measures could include on-site recycling of materials and the use of sustainable techniques such as photovoltaic panels and green roofs (roofs covered with plants).
