Learn about drawing for the first time and explore a more experimental approach.

Timetable, fees and enrolling

This course is for learners with all levels of experience in drawing and related subjects. The course is well-suited to beginners who want to learn about drawing for the first time and those who have some experience in traditional drawing and want to explore a more experimental approach.

You'll learn how to:

  • new and varied approaches to drawing and what drawing can mean to us individually
  • techniques for exploring drawing and mark-making with pens, graphite, ink, charcoal and collage
  • how to incorporate materials such as string, tape, fabric, found objects, pastels or paint in a playful and expanded approach to drawing
  • how artists have used colour, texture, shape and line to explore and communicate different themes

How the course is taught

The course:

  • is tutor-led with one-to-one support and group discussions.
  • involves sessions that include short drawing exercises in response to a proposed idea or way of working and also time to work on individual drawings for longer periods with tutor support

What to bring

The majority of materials will be provided for this course. In the first session, you will be advised about simple materials that you may be requested to bring to specific sessions.

Please note that solvents of any kind are not permitted in the workshop.

After the course

You can continue to use the skills and knowledge you have gained in drawing. You may like to follow up with further courses on drawing and related visual art practices at The Thomas Calton Centre or elsewhere in the community.
